Adamawa police arraign four men for allegedly burning 57-year-old man to death over witchcraft allegation
The police in Adamawa state have arrested four middle-aged men over the killing and setting ablaze of a 57-year-old man, Benson Timothy, whom they accused of witchcraft in Guyuk Local Government Area of Adamawa State on May 15th, 2022.
According to the police, the middle-aged men identified as Ezekiel Kumtha, Awo Mesa, Ishaku Sanda, and Oga Dapila, allegedly accused the deceased of practicing witchcraft and causing the death of underage children in the community.
The men laid the accusation on the victim at a drinking joint and then proceeded to pounce on him with clubs and also pelted him with stones before setting his body ablaze.
In the court papers filed against the suspects before a Magistrate Court in the state, the police prosecutor, Inspector Zakka Musa alleged that the defendants criminally conspired and attacked the deceased, Benson Timothy, on the ill-fated day.
According to the prosecution, the offenses, which are criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, contravened sections 60 and 192 of the State Penal Code Law, 2018
After taking a "not guilty" plea on the 2 count charges, the judge ordered their remand in prison custody and adjourned the case to July 5, 2022.
