Five young boys drown together while playing in a pond at a Chinese village — daily local undiluted newd
Five young boys drown together while playing in a pond at a Chinese village.
Five boys were found dead at a Chinese village yesterday after apparently drowning in a pond, according to police.
It is claimed the five children, aged between seven and 13, had been playing in the water before drowning altogether in a tragedy that shocked the nation today.
Police have deemed the case an accident and are carrying out further investigation.
The accident took place in Miyi County's Mawo Village in Sichuan Province.
Police were alerted of the incident at around 6.30pm yesterday by one villager who had seen five pairs of small shoes next to a pond, but no children nearby, according to a statement on Miyi police's official social media account.
Rescuers were immediately dispatched to search for the missing boys.
After about two hours, all of the five boys were found in the pond. They were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
One villager told daily undiluted breaking news that all of the five children came from Mawo Village and they were between seven and 13 years old.
The boys' identities have been confirmed and their families have been informed, according to daily undiluted breaking news quoting a local official.
Miyi Police said the five children had met up before going into the pond to play.
They added that they had ruled out the possibility of murder after seeing the results of postmortem examination.
Further police investigation is underway.
Miyi is situated near the city of Panzhihua in south-west China's Sichuan Province. The county has around 220,000 registered residents as of 2016.
As Miyi is a rural county, it is not uncommon to see 'left-behind' children there.
'Left-behind' children are those whose parents work and live in the cities, leaving them behind to live in the countryside.
These children are usually looked after by grandparents, but sometimes have no guardians at all.
The plight of these children - a total of nine million in China - is one of the most emotive consequences of China's decades-long economic boom.
Miyi police are yet to reveal whether or not the five deceased boys were 'left-behind' children.
However just last month, the Miyi government sent out a notice to the local village officials, urging them to strengthen the safety of children and provide more care to the 'left-behind' children in the county.
The five boy died less than two weeks after another 12-year-old boy in Miyi nearly drowned while catching fish in a river. He was saved by a police officer, who happened to walk past the river.
More than nine million children have been 'left behind' in China's countryside, according to latest statistics released by Beijing in 2016.
Their parents are migrant workers who decide to move to the cities to find job in order to make money.
Many of these migrant worker parents claim they have no other choices than leaving their rural hometowns for a living.
Their children would have limited access to schooling and healthcare in the cities under China's household registration system, forcing them to be left with relatives.
The plight of their children is one of the most emotive consequences of China's decades-long economic boom.
These children are usually looked after by grandparents but sometimes have no guardians at all.
In most cases, they see their mother and father only once a year around the Lunar New Year.
